The Hophni and Phinehas of Our Generation: A Call to Reverence for the Sacred

In times past, the altar of God stood as a place of sacred encounter, a dwelling of holiness, fire, and consecration. Men approached it with trembling hearts, knowing it was not a stage but a sanctuary, not a theatre but a throne room. But alas, what do we see today? The altar has become a mere platform of performance, a place of manipulation and mockery. The fire still burns, but many no longer feel it. The glory lingers, but we have grown blind to it.

We are living in a time where the sins of Hophni and Phinehas have reappeared, this time dressed in clerical robes, surrounded by bright lights and broadcast online. These were the sons of Eli, priests by ordination but corrupt by heart. They desecrated the offerings of the Lord, abused their positions, and brought disgrace upon the priesthood. Scripture tells us they "had no regard for the Lord" They slept with women at the very door of the tent of meeting. And today, their spirit lives on.

The modern-day pulpit is increasingly defiled by selfish ambition, immorality, and greed. The sacred altar is used not to lift Jesus but to elevate egos, promote personal brands, and manipulate innocent souls. Some so-called men of God now use the ministry as a cloak for sin, covering up fornication, fraud, pride, and witchcraft with the garments of a prophet. Young minister, take heed.

The calling to serve at God’s altar is not a career move. It is a consecration. You do not step into ministry to build your name but to die to yourself. The altar is not a ladder to fame. It is a table of sacrifice. It is where flesh is burned and God alone is glorified.

Never forget, the God who called you is Holy. He is not impressed by eloquence, titles, or crowds. What pleases Him is a broken and contrite heart. If you pollute the altar, if you exploit the people, if you use your calling to gratify your flesh, then the judgment that fell upon Hophni and Phinehas will not skip you. The same God who anoints is the God who removes.

As a young minister, flee from lust, from pride, from greed. Flee from the temptation to impress people rather than please God. Refuse to touch what belongs to the Lord. Refuse to sleep with those you are called to shepherd. Refuse to twist scripture for gain. The fire of the altar still consumes.

If you must preach, then live what you preach. If you must lead, then lead in holiness. Guard your purity, your integrity, and your hunger for God. Surround yourself with accountability. Stay broken. Stay humble.

Let it be said of you, not that you were popular or followed, but that you were faithful.

The hour is dark. The line between truth and deception is faint in many places. But those who honor God, He will honor. And those who despise Him shall be lightly esteemed

May we not be the Hophni and Phinehas of this generation. May we be men and women whose hearts are altars of fire, not stages of flesh.
